AIA#81 Why We Love “The Story Teller” an their Magic

I was thinking of story telling and resumes and self marketing and social media and how all these things relate.

When I was young I used to love to tell stories on the playground to the other kids.  Mostly, I would re-hash movies plots such as Alien and other horror stories.  The kids loved it.  And some even asked me to retell the same story again.

In second grade we had a story telling contest in class.  I re-told the story of a werewolf movie I saw.  I kept adding my own touches like the werewolf chasing some one in woods.  As you can imagine, I won the contest.  It was scary if nothing else.

Part of the reason why I am writing this blog right now it because I’d like to get back to story telling.

I believe there is a lot of power in telling your story to an employer or friends or anyone else that will listen.

Story telling can help connect you to other people.

I once had made a cold call to a potential employer, he immediately caught me off guard by saying, “Tell me about yourself.”

I was a taken back.

I wasn’t expecting him to ask me anything over the phone.  I did get the interview, but sadly did not get the job.

I was thinking of story telling and resumes and self marketing and social media and how all these things relate.

How do we tell our story in today’s age of social media?

Should you tell something about your trials and tribulations?  How can you leverage your bad days, errors and misfortunes.  How can you highlight your greatness without sounding like an ego maniac.

It’s a personal question, but one that everyone should be asking themselves.
